I inadvertently practiced Trāṭaka meditation as a child.

As a child I had some psychic abilities such as seeing spirits, telepathy and as I grew into my teen years, I had a few experiences with telekinesis. For many years I thought everyone sensed the same things I did. It was not until I started to notice that people were not reacting to the same things I was seeing and feeling. Then I knew I was a little different from most folks. When I shared my experiences with my family about seeing ghosts in my childhood home, they would laugh it off and say I had an over active imagination. Even though we all had experienced paranormal activity there.

In my early teens, I began seeing  what looked like a screen of faint moving dots where ever I looked. I realized if I started at it long enough, it became more detailed. So I would focus on just one area and stare for as long as I could until my eyes would begin to tear up. Through the years, I continued to do this and the fast-moving dots began transforming into what looked like a grid of sorts but the lines of it were much more curved. I would see flashes of light, moving orbs of light and dark shadows move across in front of me. Sometimes when I would go very deep, the grid would turn into very intricate geometric shapes that looked similar to a kaleidoscope. I have been doing this nightly because it helps me relax and go deeper into more traditional meditation.

Ironically, I came across an article about a form of meditation called Trāṭaka (Sanskrit n. त्राटक trāṭaka, tratak, trataka: “to look, or to gaze”) . To quote wiki, “By fixing the gaze the restless mind too comes to a halt.[2] It is said also that control of the ciliary (blink) reflex stimulates the pineal gland,[3] which some authorities identify with the third eye. Trāṭaka is said to enhance the ability to concentrate. It may increase the power of memory and bring the mind in a state of awareness, attention and focus.[4]

I have always wondered if I had been unknowingly doing something to help me have a spontaneous Kundalini awakening at age 33. I have always been a very spiritual person but I had never done any formal meditation or spiritual training beforehand. Well a new puzzle piece has just been added to my board!

    • Hi Emily,
I am trying to do research about this “grid” I see about nightly now when I lay down to meditate. Expect as your Third eye opens that you will have more visual experiences like visions, flashes of light and orbs etc. Care to share about what your vision was about or is too personal?

      Thanks,
      Morgan
